guess who uttered 500 more words than the president last night? mitt romney. we did the check. 7,890 words. obama, 7,354. it goes to the ideas and explains he was listless and a little bit, shall we say, he pondered a long time. >> we've seen him ponder a lot in the speeches. it was business consultant versus college professor. sort of harvard versus harvard. no question harvard business school versus harvard law school. no question that president obama showed his campaign has been doing the work for him and mitt romney has been doing the work for his campaign. we'll see what happens going forward. pout a question, the obama supporters were on their heels last night. were disappointed. wondering, where was this guy who they've been seeing in the tv commercials going so hard at mitt romney? he was clearly trying to be too presidential and not going after romney. >> we can't escape the fact. four of the last five incumbent presidents had lost the first debate. it's unbelievable. you have to say there is something to this. >> they're not used to being challenged

it did go well for romney last night. most people went in and out of food stamps and in and out of welfare in year-and-a-half. most people don't want to be on the government dole. most people want to work. most people are ambitious is. i don't buy, i'm surprised obama didn't bring up the 47% number last night. i'm surprised he didn't reframe it by saying something like yes, we've had a number of people on entitlements. we've had a number of people on food stamps. we had to do it to get people out of the bush recession. hopefully over time once we see numbers moving in the right direction, moody's is projecting 10 million more jobs over next 10 years, i'm sorry over next four years. boston consulting saying will get two million manufacturing jobs over the next couple of years. so these are we're on the right track. these are the metrics that need to be brought up and should have been brought up last night in the debate. >> alan, do you know anybody on food stamps or government assistance, alan? >> i do. yeah. >> okay. and

>> i think it was a great night for mitt romney. i think the doom and gloom that's been hanging over the romney campaign, republicans in general has lifted tonight. i think that the democratic advance which began literally a month ago when clint eastwood walked out on stage ended tonight. i think the race is going to tighten. i think mitt romney was in command of this from the beginning. i'm not sure that he lost an exchange during the entire debate. a startling performance in my view and just the context of how good mitt romney was tonight. >> i thought that in terms of individual exchanges i think what may have been most notable, there wasn't i think a single direct attack against mitt romney from president obama. however, they substantively dealt with policy matters. >> he was looking down tonight. he was passive. he was abstract in his answers. mitt romney was talking about real people, giving real examples. i thought he was clear. he was concise. i think the president was muddled tonight. i just wonder, we talked about this ear

this is why mitt romney can't be let off the hook in the debate tomorrow night. but it's hard to press him on these issues when he doesn't even answer the questions. here it is. >> what is the biggest misconception about you in the public debate right now? >> we'll have to create more jobs, have less debt and shrink the size of government. >> misconceptions about you? >> you get to ask the questions you want and i get to give the answers i want. >> i hope there's a moment like that tomorrow night. not going to be easy for jim lehrer. even if romney won't answer for them, it needs to be spelled out loud and clear to the american people who have been lied to. mitt romney has not been straight with americans on where he stands and where he wants to take the country and there's no better platform than for the president to take him to the house. how can you expect him to be straight with you as president when he can't even run his own campaign? get your cell phones out. tonight's question, will mitt romney continue his campaign of lies at tomorrow's debate? text a for

that's why we saw that new slit version of the romney-bot on wednesday night. this romneybot, they worked on him in the factory for hours. >> oh, lord, cynthia. >> making sure he had the right smile, making sure he seemed warm and sincere. well, who was that guy? >> i think he was -- >> this is not a guy we've seen on the campaign trail for the last -- >> i can't take any of this seriously. >> -- for the last several months. >> i think first off the whole idea that this guy is an empty suit is laughable to say that, number one. he was the governor of a state and was successful. he was able to cobble together the coalition, something this president hasn't been able to do quite frankly to get his agenda done. >> why does he keep saying -- this one gets to me. i don't like the word lie. i think he's dealing an untruth here. he did it the other night after being corrected by his staff on one of the sunday shows. he said that his health care plan, such as it's going to be, will cover people who don't have coverage for pre-existing conditions and they try to buy a po
